What are the characteristics of mold manufacturing?


In the mold industry, various molds and tools are used to obtain the desired products through methods such as injection molding, blow molding, extrusion, die casting, forging, smelting, and stamping. In short, a mold is a tool used to create shaped items and is composed of various parts; different molds are made up of different components. It primarily achieves the shaping of items by changing the physical state of the material being molded. It is often referred to as the 'mother of industry'.

A mold transforms raw materials into tools with specific shapes and sizes under external forces. This mold is widely used in stamping, die forging, cold heading, extrusion, powder metallurgy part pressing, pressure casting, as well as forming processes for engineering plastics, rubber, ceramics and other products through compression or injection molding. Therefore, mold manufacturing belongs to mechanical manufacturing.

Mold, under external forces transforms raw materials into tools with specific shapes and sizes. It is widely applied in stamping, die forging, cold heading, extrusion, powder metallurgy part pressing, pressure casting as well as forming processes for engineering plastics, rubber and ceramics through compression or injection molding. Thus mold manufacturing falls within the scope of mechanical manufacturing; its level of development is an important indicator of mechanical manufacturing standards.

In recent years, China's mold manufacturing level has been continuously improving and is gradually developing towards a high-tech intensive industry characterized by mechanization, precision and automation. Its main features are as follows.

(1) High quality requirements: The development of the manufacturing industry has led to very high quality requirements for many product parts regarding molds including dimensional accuracy, shape accuracy, processing accuracy and surface roughness etc. Additionally molds are required to have a long service life.

(2) High hardness materials used: Molds are tools used to create molded products; their material hardness exceeds that of components. Generally they are made from quenched alloy steel or hard alloys processed using unconventional methods.

(3) Difficult processing: Modules serve as carriers for mold cavities and generally consist of moving molds, fixed molds and cores etc. They mainly involve two-dimensional or three-dimensional complex curved surfaces. General cutting methods are only suitable for processing simple geometric shapes making it very difficult to ensure precision.

(4) Short production cycles: Due to product updates and intense market competition production cycles for mold manufacturing must be shortened. Using rapid prototyping technology can reduce the time cycle for producing molds by two-thirds compared to traditional methods.

(5) Single piece or set production: Due toMoldthe replicability of produced products they are generally single pieces meaning only products with certain shapes dimensions and precision can be produced. Producing one part requires multiple sets to complete processing which interrelate with each other.
